Kock Fighter Club - GET READY - FIGHT!

Hey everyone,

This is an idea that spawned out of a sketch I did for our sketch group. The theme was fighting rooster and we each had to design our fighter. I liked how my first fighter came out (the one on the right) that I went ahead and designed his opponent. I loved how these turned out. I played around with complements. If one character is leaning back with his fists out front, the other would be leaning forward with his fists tucked in. One is skinny, one is fat - tall, short, etc. I will design more and more of these if I have free time. I am attaching the original sketch, the painted final and the title screen if it were a video game. That would be cool. I love fighting games.

Gallo Detergent Billboards

Hey everyone,

This is a set of a dozen billboards I painted for Gallo Detergent here in Guatemala. I was asked to paint scenes of landmarks of different regions of the country with indigenous women wearing their respective traditional clothing. It was a fun project to work on. It took most of my time for the last few weeks but I finally finished. They have been posted up all over the country. I'll have to plan road trips to check them out. Hope you like them.

This is a quick sketch I did of Ryan Gosling. I think he's a cool cat with an interesting face. I had just seen the Ides of March and Drive when I did this sketch. I wasn't impressed at all with Drive. The character design is cool but the movie is slow as hell. I expected more I guess. The Ides of March was good. Hope you like it.

Hey everyone,

This is Hayao Miyazaki. It was done for Caricaturama Showdown 3000 on facebook. I am posting some work in progress shots (WIPs) and the final image.

I started sketching him out in Photoshop and I first envisioned him as Prince Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke. I put on the movie as I worked on this piece. Then I saw the spirit of the forest and I thought of changing the concept to that. I flattened the layers with the background and added some base tone. I then added a CURVES adjustment mask to give the shadows and the highlights different colors. I made a new layer and set it to overlay and added the base colors. I also tried a new layer and set it to COLOR on different parts of the body because I didn't like how they were coming out in overlay. I recommend experimenting with different layer styles. You can always get happy accidents by experimenting. I added more depth to the background by insinuating trees. I then added a painted canvas texture to the whole piece. I imported the texture, inverted it and desaturated it. The normal look of the texture was making my piece too dark. I toyed with adjustment layers of brightness and contrast throughout the making of this piece. I created new layers set to overlay to make colors pop. I also tried something new with the brush which was to set it to color dodge. I did this on the orange fur of the body. I sample the same base color and changed the brush setting to COLOR DODGE. I then painted on a little bit and this gave me a more vibrant orange. I changed the brush back to NORMAL and kept painting. I then proceeded to refine the final details. This morning a friend recommended that I should add a Kodama to the piece to set it more in the Mononoke universe. I also added some "magic" lights all over the piece to enhance the fantasy look. Thank God. My entries took home prizes in their respective contests. My wizard got 4th place and my take on Thorin Oakenshield took second. Congrats to the winners. There were some awesome entries this month. I'm sure it was a pain in the butt to judge. Hope you like them and make sure to participate in the coming months. I highly recommend these challenges.

Hey everyone,

These are a few pieces I worked on late last year. This was a great project to work on. I loved how the sketches came out and they look awesome on the street. These are 3 of the five pieces I did. One won't be used and hopefully I will get a sample of the other one. These were all done digitally. I also worked on the surrounding sketches to give that "doodle during class" look. I had to gather all sorts of references to give me a better idea of how their features work. I also had to fill in the gaps and guess how they would look with those expressions. Hope you like them.

First and Last Sketches

Hey everyone,

This is my first post for 2012. I wanted to share the last sketch I did last year and the one I did last night. The last sketch is one of a dark elf type character that I wanted to do. I was watching The Fellowship of the Ring as I did this one. I also was looking at reference of clothing. I found that a great source of inspiration is the works of Skingraft. They do these intricate works with leather so if you want to do some badass leather jacket or pants, then you should check them out. I did the sketch on bristol paper with a 4B pencil. I have been working in pencil more because I haven't done many sketches traditionally. It is a pain sometimes but the satisfaction is pretty great once the sketch is finished. The second character is one that I developed for this story I am working on. It's called Jackie Giant Killer. This is the human version of one of the giants. This one took about 3 hours to develop with the pose studies, the thumbnails, and overall design. I used the same tools as the last sketch. I added a multiply layer with a low opacity to create more contrast between the clothing and the skin. Hope you like it. I will work on a color version soon.

Here is my take on the topic for the December challenge at sketchtheatre.com forums. The topic was wizard. I did this sketch in graphite. It had been a while since I did a sketch in graphite. It was hard to commit and make decisions because of the eraser. I have been sketching in ink which obligates me to commit and make "better marks" because of the margin of error. Making of - Red Riding Hood

Hey everyone,

Like I said yesterday here is the making of process for Red Riding Hood.

Step 1 - create a new file in a more horizontal setup and divide the screen in four parts. Then I take this badass Barontieri brush to sketch out my initial concepts. I pick one.

Here's the winner.

Step 2 - I start to define shapes and forms with the same sketch brush. Here is where I get lost in defining things and sometimes forget to save the steps. It's easy to get lost in the process.

Step 3 - More definition. Things are coming into place. I work in a small scale (25%) to give me an idea of how the whole piece is coming out and not get distracted by details.

Step 4 - I create a new layer and set it to OVERLAY to add color. I try to define how the final colors would be and just add warmer and cooler colors when needed in new layers later on.

Step 5 - I flatten all the layers and focus on defining the ground and all the other details of the scene.

Last step - I add a texture to the drawing and continue drawing on top. I add a rock texture to the ground to make it pop a bit more. I add an adjustment layer to work out the color balance and levels. The final image is found on the last post. Hope this was useful.

This is the character I did for this week's CHOW(Character of the Week # 264).

I started of with line art and then began shading but I didn't like how it was coming out so I decided to change my approach. I chose the freestyle pen tool to create the shapes. I worked different elements on different layers. I then flattened them and started drawing on a normal layer on top. I also erased the bits I didn't need or the ones that didn't look right. I then placed a color film layer on top for the final texture. Hope you like it.

It's been a while but I've been busy working on this project. This is the first time I do something like this. I worked on this project with the awesome team from Miracle Factory here in Guatemala(miraclefactoryfx.com). I was involved in the character design, storyboard, final line art, vehicles, final colors, and one tiny animation. It was hard ass work but fun. I am attaching the character design process. I first did a color study for the characters to make sure they were all easily identifiable.

I then did a design pass with more of my standard style. I was then told to look at Patrick Brown's work for inspiration. The final characters were greatly influenced by his dynamic style. Hope you like it.

A day's worth of inspiration

Hey everyone,

Here is a little something I worked on tonight. I came across a site called Mapping Praxis(.com) where they have interviews with famous designers. As I was listening to the what they were saying and looking at their work, I was inspired to create a little something before going to bed. I haven't had time to work on personal stuff this week so I decided to make time for this. I went back to alchemy and started listening to some Ministry of Sound tracks. I worked the program's magic and this image of this funky-indian chick popped out. I fleshed it out in three or four sessions and put it all together in Photoshop. I experimented with the opposite color scheme by hitting command + i and I loved the result so I decided to include it. I could see this working as a CD cover or something (food for thought). Thank God my entry was one of the 10 winners of the DESTAPARTE contest held by Coca Cola and Saul E. Mendez. It was so cool to see my design printed on a large Coke bottle. I was so shocked when I saw that I won. There were loads of truly amazing designs. Just goes to show all the talent in this country. I wish that these sort of contests were more frequent. It was a great opportunity for all sorts of artists to express themselves, get exposure, and win cool stuff. Here are a few photos from the event. Here is a piece I did last night. I did it with a mechanical pencil. I do this sometimes just to not lose practice. I'm glad with how this came out because I didn't use reference (although I wanted to). I was inspired to do this by the concept work of Alex Taini for Heavenly Sword. That's a game with a badass female lead character which is what I am trying to do with JGK. Hope you like it.

Here are 4 more concept scenes for Jackie Giant Killer. I have loads of fun making these. They take me a little under an hour to create each. The only way I am able to work this fast is by doing a preliminary warm up sketch. That sketch takes as long as it needs to come out right. Sometimes it's hard to find the idea but once one image works, the others just flow out. Stay tuned for the making of videos. Hope you like them.

This is my entry to the challenge called CGHUB and ImagineFX Bobby Chiu's Fairytales Re-imagined. I chose to redesign JACK THE GIANT KILLER. I chose to make the main character female. As I was working on the piece, I decided to design the lead character to help me solve problems I was having with the piece. I also designed the logo for the story as if it were going to be made into a movie, comic book, short film, cartoon series or whatever. I also developed 4 concept scenes of what it would look like. Making of - Alice in Borderlands

Hey everyone,

This is how I went about to create this image.

1. I open up a new document (8.5X11) and I make the background darker (-25%). I chose one of my favorite sketching brushes and I lay down the general idea f

or the illustration. I normally explore 4 options for this by splitting the image into four smaller images, but this time I was very happy with my initial sketch.

2. I use a custom brush to lay down a vague idea of how the armor is going to work as well as other costume elements.

3. I define the features even further and start adding more tone to define form.

4. I add a CURVES adjustment layer. I select each channel individually to give the piece a wash of color. The good thing about CURVES is that you can add two colors at the same time. One for the lighter tones and one for the darker ones.

5. I add a new layer set to OVERLAY and I start adding color.

6. I add all the colors and define form and detail in a NORMAL layer.

7. I make her hair longer and start defining details more and more going from general to specific.

8. I define the face. I wanted to leave the face till the end. Sometimes I put too much emphasis on the face and forget to define other features.

Hey everyone,

This is the process I followed to create the design for the DESTAPARTE challenge. Like I mentioned before I used Alchemy to create it. It took six different sessions to create all the elements that make up the final design. When you open up the program you have to change from LINE to SHAPE. Then go to AFFECT and check the following actions: GRADIENT, MIRROR, COLOR CHANGER. Now you are ready to start.

I then brought them all into Photoshop and pasted them into one file. I erased and redrew where I needed to in order to blend the pieces better and make them seem like one design. I set all the layers to multiply. This works best if you have a white background. All the files were in PNG format. (You can export SVG from the program and open it up in Illustrator, but I had problems exporting an image once there were too many elements in it).

Here is a small video sample of an image created in a similar manner using the program. Hope you like it and find it useful.

This is a freelance project I worked on last week. I was hired by the folks at www.coinmad.com to create icons for the different categories of items they sell. The go from adult, baby, electronics to movies, music, and travel. I had loads of fun creating all these icons. The line art was done in Photoshop and then converted and colored in Illustrator. Digital Painting Class

I just got back from teaching my first private digital painting class. It was great fun. I helped my student with his workflow and taught him about brushes and color. We also talked about lighting and textures. I did a demo of how I would paint one of his sketches. I taught him about thumbnails and composition. I'm pretty happy with how everything went. I look forward to teaching him again. It is true what they say that the more you teach the more you learn. On a technical note, I used a brush she created which I got from one of her aforementioned tutorials. I took a different approach when creating this image. I started off doing line art work (like I usually do) but after a couple of minutes into the painting, I decided to change the technique and worked on the silhouette. After the silhouette was established, I started defining form with light. I started with a medium dark green tone over a light pink background. I used a 70% opacity on the brush and this helped me get loads of color variation. I used the ALT key for color sampling and continued defining form. I added a NOISE filter at about 80%. I desaturated the image completely.

Hey everyone,

Here are the steps I took to create my most recent caricature piece. Hope you like it and find it helpful.

Step -1

I made the sketch with mechanical

pencil on regular sketch paper. I typed in Messi 2011 and Rooney 2011 in the Google search bar and that brought up a whole series of images. I didn't click on any of them because I wanted to see different angles of their faces to get a better idea of their features. Once the sketch was finished, I took a picture of it with my digital camera and opened it on Photoshop.

Step -2

I set the layer to multiply over a plaster texture I found online. You can find all sorts of textures on Google.

Step -3

I created a new layer under the pencil lines and started to add shading. I wanted a cartoony look so I added the thick outline around the characters.

Step -4

I used CURVES as an adjustment layer over the whole piece to give it a wash of color. I tweaked each channel (RGB) individually to get the look I wanted.

Step -5

I created a new layer on top set to overlay. I used a low opacity to add washes of color to the faces. I wanted it to have an unfinished watercolor look. I kept this up for all the pieces like the clothing and hair.

Step -6

Once I had all the colors, I duplicated the layer and set it to overlay to make the colors more saturated. I also added a shape over the layer. I erased the bits that covered the characters and set it to multiply. I lowered the opacity and added the silhouette of the Champions League Cup with the lettering. I then added splatter bits with a brush. I saved as jpeg and duplicated the final piece. I added the high pass filter and set the layer to Soft light at 50% opacity. I also added a Gaussian blur layer under that to avoid making everything so sharp. Signed. Finished.

This is a piece I created to celebrate the upcoming final for the 2011 Champions League between Manchester United and FC Barcelona. Barca is my favorite team so I'll be rooting for them this saturday. I like Manchester as well but my loyalties lie with the Spanish team. I hope it's a good match. Both teams are very complete and have many great players. I hope you like the piece. I certainly had fun making it.

This is my entry to the May 2011 contest on the sketchtheatre.com forums. It was done with a black ballpoint pen on paper. I enjoy working in this medium. There is almost no margin of error which makes me think carefully before making a mark. There's a lot of exploration of shapes but you slowly figure out shape and form. I used horse anatomy as an inspiration for this dragon. I haven't really seen that done before so I went for it. I didn't want my dragon to look like a big iguana. Hope you like it.

I found this video on YouTube for which I did some voice work a couple of months ago. It was for a contest held by Universidad Francisco Marroquin and Singularity University. I enjoy doing voice work very much. I don't get to do it as often as I would like, but it's always nice to get a call requesting it. I'll see if I can find more of the videos I've worked on. The only problem is that most of them have been pieces for corporate presentations so it'll be a little hard to find them online. Anyway, hope you like it.

Every time I watch Friends re-runs and I hear them say Rach, I always think of a couple called Rach and Roach. It is a couple of post-apocalyptic mercenaries.
